Quilted Northern Bath Tissue History

1901

Northern Paper Mills produces its first sanitary tissue at the Green Bay East Mill in Wisconsin. The packages contain 1,000 sheets of tissue, each 4 x 10 inches. Each bundle is pierced with a wire loop so that it can be hung from a nail.

1902

Northern Tissue

Northern Tissue is named.

1920s

Northern Paper Mills emerges as the largest producer of bath tissue in the world. Northern Tissue is commended for its sterilization, its white appearance to match modern bathrooms, and the fact that it requires no embarrassing conversation when purchased.

Northern Tissue is hailed as a splinter-free toilet paper.

1930s
1942

Americans are reminded that hoarding tissue is unpatriotic, as production of Northern Tissue is limited during World War II.

1948

'Fluffy' the Northern cub appears in advertising, becoming Northern Tissue's new "salesman."

1954

Northern Tissue

Northern Tissue introduces colored bathroom tissue.

1958

Northern Tissue
Northern introduces American Beauties in its advertisements. The portraits of young girls, by artist Frances Hook, appeared on packages the following year and become synonymous with Northern Tissue.

1962

Northern became a two-ply tissue, but returned to one-ply after a year due to lack of demand.

1975

Northern Tissue again becomes two-ply.

1993

Quilted Northern Tissue

Northern Tissue is re-launched as Quilted Northern.

1997

Quilted Northern advertising divas, the Quilters, are born.

2002

Quilted Northern introduces "Softest Ever" Quilted Northern bath tissue.

2008

Quilted Northern introduces Quilted Northern Ultra Plush™.
